Two dead in Augusta County highway accident

Chris Graham

policecar3Virginia State Police Trooper A.T. Coffey is still investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash in Augusta County. At 11:59 a.m. Friday, Virginia State Police were called to the scene of the crash on Route 254 near the intersection of Route 42 in the Buffalo Gap community. Route 254 is still closed for the crash investigation. Thus, motorists traveling through that area should seek an alternate route.

A cattle truck was eastbound on Route 254 when it crossed the centerline and struck head on a westbound 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier.

The driver of the Cavalier, Gaylon W. Adkins, 52, of Augusta Springs, and passenger, Roy J. Jackson, 70, of Augusta Springs, died at the scene.

The driver of the truck was transported on to UVA Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time. The Virginia State Police’s Appomattox Division Accident Investigation Team and Motor Carrier Safety Team are both on scene assisting with the investigation.

The truck was loaded the cattle at the time of the crash. None of the cattle died in the crash. All of the cattle have been safely removed from the truck and transported from the scene.
