A 5,000-person music hall will open at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront on Sunday, May 4, with a performance of Three Dog Night.
The Dome returns to Atlantic Park almost 30 years after the original closed picking up where the former landmark left off. The original Dome hosted acts including Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix.
The original venue, constructed in 1957, was demolished to make room for a parking lot in 1994. Three Dog Night was the last band to perform at the original Dome in June 1993, and they are slated to open the new venue on May 4.
The city-owned venue will be operated in partnership with Live Nation and is set up for 3,500 ticketholders in the indoor auditorium with an adjoining outdoor lawn that has a retractable sliding door that will expand capacity to welcome 5,000 total guests.
“The Dome will quickly become a go-to destination for music, comedy, and special events, all while paying homage to the legacy of the original Dome — a celebrated home for jazz, soul, and rock ‘n’ roll,” said Virginia Beach Mayor Bobby Dyer.
The Dome is part of a $325 million project that will also include a surf park, retail and office space, parking and luxury apartment homes.
