The Sophie’s choice attorney general election may be stabilizing for Jay Jones, the Democratic Party nominee, whose texts fantasizing about the deaths of a former Republican House Speaker and his children still don’t make Jason Miyares, the Trump rubberstamp running for re-election, look any better.
The Jones campaign sent out PR on Friday claiming that it had raised $500,000 in the aftermath of a Thursday debate between the candidates, during which, yes, obviously, Miyares ran repeatedly with mentions of the three-year-old texts.

“Virginians are stepping up to join our campaign because the stakes of this election are clear: either MAGA Miyares lets Trump control Virginia, or we finally elect an attorney general who puts Virginians first,” said Rachel Rothman, the campaign manager for the Jay Jones effort.
I don’t envy Rothman for her job – needing to put a happy face on the campaign of an obvious political opportunist who ignored that the texts in which he fantasized about a hypothetical situation in which he would have two bullets to use on Todd Gilbert, the former Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, Adolf Hitler, who, obviously, Adolf Hiter, and Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge despot who oversaw the murders of 2 million of his Cambodian countrymen in the 1970s.
“Gilbert gets two bullets to the head,” Jones wrote. “Spoiler: put Gilbert in the crew with the two worst people you know, and he receives both bullets every time.”
And then, on Gilbert’s kids, then aged 2 and 5:
Only when people feel pain personally do they move on policy. …
I mean do I think Todd and Jennifer are evil? And that they’re breeding little fascists? Yes
Yeah, yikes.
The only possible defense I can think of here is: this is all theoretical?

Meanwhile, we have Jason Miyares, whose more tangible sins include using taxpayer funds to pick on trans swimmers, hosting Trump/Epstein apologist Pam Bondi at a human-trafficking forum, helping the Trumpers dismantle DEI offices at our state-run colleges and universities, bulling hospitals to suspend gender-affirming care for trans teens, taking the right to vote away from thousands of Virginians, and I’m leaving a lot out here.

Jones, in the AG debate on Thursday, hit back at Miyares on the above and more, and just as Jones couldn’t do much to atone for his stupid death-wish texts, Miyares can’t do anything to make good on his penchant for wasting our tax dollars trying to fluff Trump.
Shannon Taylor would be prosecuting that case for us if Jones had put his ambition aside, done the right thing and not run.
Alas, she’s not, and we’re stuck with the choice between Charles Bronson and Temu Rubio.
