A massive great white shark has pinged in the Outer Banks, near the popular Cape Hatteras tourist destination known for its iconic lighthouse.

Contender, a 1,600-pound adult male shark, who is more than 13 feet in length, surfaced approximately 22 miles from Cape Hatteras this week, according to the nonprofit Ocearch.

Ocearch tagged the great white in January on the Florida-Georgia coast, and said it’s the largest male shark tagged in the western Atlantic waters.

The shark is estimated to be 30 years old.

The male shark is likely traveling the coast in search of food.

You can follow Contender’s path and pings online with Ocearch.
