The Shenandoah Valley Art Center in Waynesboro will showcase the art of Jasper Drilling Aug. 1-Sept. 28.
An opening reception will be held Aug. 3 from 5-7 p.m.
Drilling is an oil painter exploring the relationship between gender and the body through self-portraits.
“Through painting, I express my feelings and perceptions of gender and how I navigate these emotions as a transgender person,” said Drilling. “Using oil paints, I employ vibrant underpaintings, outlines and rough brush marks to translate my thoughts onto the canvas.”
Reflecting on their experiences growing up queer and trans, Jasper navigates identity and emotions on canvas.
“My paintings document growing up queer and trans revealing both the genesis of my transmasculinity and contradictions to who I am today,” Drilling said.
“I reflect on the expectations placed on me to look or act a certain way and channel my vulnerabilities and emotions about my body because of my identity.”
A recent BA in Studio Art graduate from the University of Mary Washington, Drilling received the Emil R. Schnellock Award in painting.
Based in Richmond, Drilling has exhibited work statewide including the “Made in VA” exhibit.
SVAC is located at 122 S. Wayne Ave. in Downtown Waynesboro.
