The City of Staunton and the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission marked the completion of the Lewis Street Hub Rehabilitation Project with a ribbon-cutting on Friday.

The CSPDC, which operates and manages BRITE Transit, led the project to rehab the North Lewis Street Parking Lot, in collaboration with the City of Staunton.

The project was funded through a grant from the Federal Transit Administration.

Between 2021 and 2024, the CSPDC, the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation and engineers from Kimley-Horn and Associates worked to design the new hub.

Earlier this year, the CSPDC awarded a construction contract to Virginia Infrastructure Inc. to begin tearing up the existing asphalt and replacing it with long-lasting concrete.

In addition to more resilient pavement, the rehabilitation project includes a designated bus lane and new parking area, all new ADA-accessible sidewalks, curb ramps with detectable warning surface plates, safety lighting, installation of conduits for future EV charging stations, and new landscaping.

“We are proud to unveil the newly rehabilitated Lewis Street Hub, which will serve as a cornerstone of our transit system,” said Ann Cundy, the executive director at the CSPDC. “This project reflects our commitment to enhancing transportation options in Staunton, contributing to a safer and more accessible community.”

“I couldn’t be prouder of the city’s partnership with the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission and BRITE bus,” Staunton Mayor Steve Claffey said. “The service you provide to our community is not only outstanding, but it is essential. The changes here at Lewis Street Hub are truly spectacular. The Hub is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together toward a shared vision, blending modern functionality with a distinct architectural heritage.”
