Staunton and the surrounding communities are full of talent when it comes to the arts, and, despite an abundance of art shows, theater productions and musical performances, the community is always ready for more.
ShenanArts is limited to five to eight shows on the main stage per season.
But, starting in March 2026, ShenanArts will have a second venue space for additional shows.
“I guess the idea was kind of born out of every year we get submissions for lesser known shows [and locally-written originals],” said ShenanArts Artistic Director Matt Parrish.
When he became Artistic Director, he wanted to find a way to produce more shows and allow local talent’s work to be seen.
“I’ve always felt like we should be doing more of these artsy, obscure shows,” Parrish said. He created the idea in July for “The Totally Awesome 80s Concert,” which showcased local singers.
A few months ago, he began exploring options for a second venue space, and found that Queen City Place owner Jim Call, who has always supported local art and ShenanArts, was more than willing to partner and provide a venue.
“It just seemed like a really good fit,” Parrish said.
With a plan for four or five shows per year and Thursday to Sunday performances like on the main stage, Parrish said that ShenanArts Underground will debut at Queen City Place with “Waiting for Godot.” The tragicomedy was written by Irish playwright Samuel Beckett and published in 1952. Clarence Joseph Finn will direct. He previously directed “Proof” last summer.
After announcing ShenanArts Underground on the theater’s Facebook page Friday, Parrish said the new project received a lot of positive attention and feedback.
“I’m super excited to be able to start doing smaller shows,” he said.
Ticket pricing will be similar to that for main stage performances at ShenanArts. Parrish said variety programming will be included, such as play readings, poetry readings and live concerts.
In the meantime, ShenanArts will present “Daddy Long Legs” in September 2025, “The Haunting of Hill House” in October 2025 and “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: The Musical” in December 2025.
The theater recently announced “Frozen” for May 2026 and Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas: The Musical” for December 2026.
ShenanArts Underground will seat approximately 60, so anyone interested is encouraged to stay informed by visiting online and get tickets when they are available.
ShenanArts is at 300 Churchville Ave., Staunton. Queen City Place is at 12 Byers Street, Staunton.
