Recently StauntonSenior Center held programs for members concerning gardening and composting thanks to ladies from the local home health agencies and nursing home/rehab facilities who offer monthly health topics. As a result, members have planted seeds in egg cartons which are sprouting a variety of flowers and vegetables such as carrots, radishes, onions, tomatoes, sunflowers, and phlox. The tiny plants are loving the tremendous amounts of sunshine which flood through the enormous windows of the Center as well as the tender loving care from members and staff watering them. Soon the seedlings will be transplanted into pots and ultimately will find homes in the wooden planters outside.
Also initiated was a compost area which was begun in a cardboard box with soil at the bottom and is being added to with fruit and vegetable peelings, egg shells, coffee grounds, grass clippings, and leaves. When formed, the compost will enrich the soil in the planters, enabling the flowers and produce to grow much better! The cardboard box can disintegrate into the compost as well; however, SSC may be able to obtain a more substantial composting container if some volunteer efforts are successful!
