West End residents are seeing and hearing some road work on West Beverley Street as the city of Staunton prepares the area for the opening of a new Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court building in fall 2025.

Sidewalk ramp work has begun at several intersections and are part of a larger paving and pedestrian improvements project, which will include improvements to existing sidewalks at 18 intersections and approximately 600 feet of new sidewalk on West Beverley beginning near Grubert Avenue, heading west.

“Planning for this paving project has been in the works since 2020 and it’s great to see construction begin. This project also provides an exciting opportunity for the city to implement elements of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan for the West End,” Rodney Rhodes, Staunton’s Director of Community Development, said.

Milling and repaving will be done on West Beverley from the western city limits to the intersection of West Frederick Street at the eastern edge of Thornrose Cemetery, New Street from Greenville Avenue to Sunnyside Street, West Frederick from 211 W. Frederick to North Jefferson Street, one-block of North Jefferson down to Beverley, and approximately one mile of New Hope Road from Statler Boulevard heading east.

Repaving work will include pavement markings and signage for bicycle infrastructure along West Beverley.

Funding is provided by several sources including VDOT SGR (State of Good Repair) Repaving, the city of Staunton and Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding through HUD.

Completion is expected by summer 2025. The current schedule has sidewalk improvements beginning at the western edge of town and moving toward downtown. Paving along the areas of sidewalk improvements will not be done until after adjacent concrete work is complete. Re-paving of New Hope Road may occur as early as October 2024.
