The Bowie Baysox (61-66) limited the Flying Squirrels (60-67) to one run en route to a 3-1 victory on Thursday evening at Prince George’s Stadium. The Squirrels lone run was scored in the third inning when Dylan Davis drilled his 13th home run of the season. Thursday was the final meeting of the year between the two clubs, with Bowie winning the season series 11-9. Richmond continues the two-city trip with the first of four games in Altoona on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Richmond will return to Funnville for the last homestand of the year starting on Monday, August 27.
They Baysox also held Richmond to just four hits. Aside from Davis’ homer, Jonah Arenado (1-4, 2B) ripped a double and Caleb Gindl recorded a pair of singles and a walk.
Davis put the Squirrels ahead 1-0 in the second inning. Leading off the frame, Davis swatted a 3-2 pitch deep over the right field fence for the game’s first run. The dinger was Davis’ 13th of the season, tying him with Luigi Rodriguez for the team lead. Bowie’s starting pitcher Bruce Zimmerman also relinquished a single in the inning, before retiring the last three batters, two via strikeout (Matt Lipka, Matt Winn), ending the inning.
Logan Webb was sharp to start his fourth Double-A start for Richmond. The 21 year-old did initiate difficulty in the third inning as Bowie pushed across a run to even the contest, 1-1. Webb walked Rylan Bannon and hit Corban Joseph on the foot, placing two on with one out. Ryan Mountcastle then bounced a base hit between third and short to tie the game.
The Baysox bumped Webb’s pitch count up to 75 in the fourth inning and took advantage of a costly error to take the lead. With one out, Ademar Rifaela rolled a routine grounder to second base. CJ Hinojosa fielder easily but tossed the ball low and past the first baseman Jonah Arenado. Webb retired the next batter before he allowed the go-ahead two-run homer to Brett Cumberland. The righty Webb finished the inning and worked into the fifth.
The righty Webb lasted 4.2 innings and suffered the loss in the outing. Webb walked two and struck out three, tossing 86 pitches in the defeat. Dan Slania relieved Webb with a runner on base in the fifth and stranded Ryan Mountcastle on second. Slania was superb over 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. Ian Gardeck made his third appearance of the year for Richmond and worked a 1-2-3 eighth.
Baysox lefty Zimmerman allowed just the one run in a five-inning effort. Pitching in front of a few dozen friends and family, the Baltimore native yielded just three hits to earn the win. Zimmerman stuck out five batters and did not walk one, needing just 69 pitches in the effort. Former UVA standout Branden Kline shut the door in the ninth. It was Kline’s 13th save in 14 opportunities this year.
The Flying Squirrels continue final road trip of the season in Altoona, PA on Friday at 7:05 p.m. the four-game, three-day series will begin with Richmond LHP Conner Menez (6-4, 4.68) on the mound against Curve RHP Dario Agrazl (5-3, 2.58).
