Sox win 3-0 behind Augliera’s brilliance

Chris Graham

salem red soxStarting pitcher Mike Augliera had by far his best outing as a member of the Salem Red Sox, and Salem shut out the Carolina Mudcats 3-0 on Independence Day. Augliera went a personal season-best eight innings, allowing no runs on just four hits, zero walks, and seven strikeouts. He only had to throw 99 pitches to complete the eight innings of work and earn a victory.

On offense, Salem took care of business early against Carolina starter Joseph Colon. In the first, a Keury De La Cruz double plated Deven Marrero. In the third, a Brandon Jacobs double scored Marrero and Henry Ramos. Colon lasted only three innings, allowed three runs, and picked up the defeat.

The Sox bats were quiet late. Carolina relievers Francisco Jimenez and Owen Dew combined for six innings of scoreless relief. On the night, four Red Sox were held hitless, and the no batter collected more than two hits. But Salem did enough in the initial three frames to seal the win, because of the Augliera’s performance.

Robby Scott pitched a 1-2-3 ninth and grabbed his first save of the year. Scott and Augliera combined to hold seven of the nine Mudcats hitters with a base hit.

Salem, now on a two-game winning streak, will face Carolina again Friday night. Henry Owens will pitch for Salem against Nick Pasquale.
