Lefty Jack Snodgrass worked six sturdy innings, and the Richmond Flying Squirrels (17-23) downed the Bowie Baysox (22-21), 5-2, in front of 5,096 at The Diamond on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Squirrels will have the chance to take the series on Monday. They improved to 9-7 against Bowie on the year.
Bowie struck quickly against Snodgrass in the top of the first inning. Glynn Davis, Mike Yastrzemski and Quincy Latimore produced three consecutive singles to start the ballgame. Latimore’s single, to left-center field, plated Davis to give the Baysox a 1-0 lead.
The Baysox were back at in the second, plating a second run. Snodgrass created his own trouble with a leadoff walk issued to Chris O’Brien. Garabez Rosa followed and drove a double to the wall in left field. O’Brien moved to third and scored a batter later when Sharlon Schoop grounded out.
The Squirrels went down on 13 pitches in the first two innings, but got to right-hander Parker Bridwell in the third. Blake Miller, in his first at-bat since coming off the Disabled List, opened the inning with a double up the left-field line. Daniel Carbonell followed and muscled a soft-single to right-center field. Kelby Tomlinson then pulled a double past third base to plate Miller with Richmond’s first run. Devin Harris followed and grounded out to bring home Carbonell to tie the game, 2-2. Mac Williamson then punched a single to right field that scored Tomlinson to give the Squirrels their first lead, 3-2. The single extended Williamson’s hit-streak to 13 games. He swiped second base and advanced to third when David Freitas threw wildly. Williamson scored for a 4-2 advantage on a wild-pitch from Bridwell.
Richmond tacked on a run against Bridwell in the fifth. Bridwell issued a one-out walk to Tomlinson, who promptly stole second base. Harris knocked him in for a, 5-2, lead with a single to left field.
Snodgrass (4-3) worked six solid innings, permitting two runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out two. He earned his fourth win of the season, and third over the Baysox.
Bridwell (1-3) worked seven innings to the loss, his third. He conceded five runs, four earned, on seven hits. He walked three and struck out five.
Right-hander Pedro Rodriguez handled two innings of scoreless relief behind Snodgrass, and lefty Josh Osich earned his eighth save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
The finale of the four-game series is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. at The Diamond on Monday afternoon. Richmond RHP Kyle Crick (0-1, 2.28) will make the start against Bowie RHP Jarrett Miller (0-0, —).
