salem red soxThe Salem Red Sox ran their winning streak to six games Tuesday night with an exciting extra-innings win over the Carolina Mudcats, 6-5 in 12 innings at Five County Stadium.

The Red Sox (9-4) broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third against Mudcats starter Matt Withrow, when Yoan Moncada singled, stole second base and advanced to third on a passed ball. Moncada scored on an Andrew Benintendi sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

Salem struck again in the top of the fourth inning against reliever Wes Parsons, who walked Moncada with the bases loaded, scoring Bryan Hudson and extending the lead to 2-0.

Carolina (6-7) got a run back in the bottom of the fourth against Travis Lakins, when catcher Joseph Odom ripped a solo home run to left. Lakins was able to work out of further trouble and left the game after 5.0 innings, allowing just the one tally on five hits, walking two and striking out seven.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Red Sox bloated the lead against Parsons thanks to a two-run triple from Benintendi, who then scored on an RBI single from Nick Longhi to make it 5-1. The triple was Benintendi’s sixth of the season, which leads Minor League Baseball.

Manny Alcantara chucked a perfect sixth, but surrendered three runs in the seventh as the Mudcats closed the deficit to 5-4. German Taveras preserved the lead with a perfect eighth, but allowed a leadoff double to Joey Meneses in the ninth. After a wild pitch that saw pinch-runner Stephen Gaylor advance to third, a Keith Curcio sacrifice fly tied the score at five.

Both teams put runners on in the 10th and 11th innings, but neither was able to bring home the go-ahead tally.

In the 12th inning, though, the Red Sox broke through, plating a run without a hit against Evan Phillips. Salem loaded the bases on an error and two walks and scored the eventually winning tally when Moncada was hit by a 0-2 pitch to make it 6-5. A double play kept it a one-run game, but Yankory Pimentel set the Mudcats down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 12th to record his second save of the season.

Phillips (0-1) got the loss for Carolina, while Taveras (1-0) went 4.0 innings in relief to get the win for Salem.

Salem completes the three-game series with the Carolina Mudcats on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. The Red Sox will send Jalen Beeks (1-0, 0.84) to the mound to make his third start of the season, while the Mudcats will counter with Max Povse (1-0,0.00).
