RMH Behavioral Health will host the forum “Bipolar Disorders Across the Lifespan” from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 7 in the RMH Lower Level conference rooms.

Clinicians, patients, family members and the public are invited to attend. RMH Behavioral Health experts will discuss bipolar disorder symptoms, treatments and recent research. Registration is required by calling Healthsource at 540-564-7200. The cost of the forum is $69 per person.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), about 5.7 million adults in the United States are living with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder affects men and women equally across all races, ethnic groups and socioeconomic classes, the NIH says. While bipolar disorder is more common in older teenagers and young adults, it can affect children as young as 6. Some experts believe the condition is rare and over-diagnosed, while others disagree.

The following presentations are scheduled:
· “Bipolar Disorder: Over-diagnosed, under-diagnosed, misdiagnosed or red herring,” presented by Lawrence Connell, MD.
· “Disorders co-occurring with bipolar disorder,” presented by Raymond Alderfer, MD.
· “Bipolar and comorbid disorders in children and adolescents: Challenges in diagnosis and management,” presented by Aamir Mahmood, MD.
· “The role of psychological testing in the assessment of bipolar disorder,” presented by Phil Wickline, Ph.D.
· “Doing better today: Using DBT skills to manage emotions and tolerate distressful symptoms,” presented by Nicole Curtis, LPC.

“Our goal in presenting this forum to help those affected by, or involved in treatment of, bipolar disorder to help ensure the best possible care and treatment outcomes,” said Jane Pirooz, community education manager, Behavioral Health.
