Retailers praise bipartisan Senate commitment to marketplace fairness

congressIn 2013, the Marketplace Fairness Act passed the Senate on a strong bipartisan vote. Despite that action, retailers were forced to wait for a federal e-fairness solution when the House of Representatives failed to act on similar legislation at the end of session in 2014. A bipartisan coalition of Senators led by Budget Committee Chairman Senator Mike Enzi (R-WY) and Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) has reintroduced Senate legislation as a first step toward finding a solution in 2015. Joe Rinzel, Senior Vice President for Government Affairs, issued the following statement regarding the retail community’s continued push for federal e-fairness legislation.

“Ending the special tax treatment afforded to online-only retailers has been a top legislative priority for the retail industry, and it’s time to finish the job in 2015. All retailers deserve a fair shot to compete in the free market without the government’s thumb on the scale.”

“Reintroduction of the Marketplace Fairness Act by Sens. Enzi and Durbin re-affirms the commitment of a bipartisan majority in the Senate to solve this problem once and for all, and we are hopeful that the House of Representatives will follow suit so that negotiations can begin on a final product.”
