QB situation at UVa. up in the air?

Listen to today’s “SportsDominion Show,” featuring comments from Virginia football coach Al Groh about his team’s spring-practice period. Show Length: 8:42.

It has been widely assumed that Peter Lalich will be the starting quarterback at UVa. next fall now that Jameel Sewell is no longer a part of the program in Charlottesville.

Al Groh isn’t among those making that assumption right now.

Groh made it clear today in a conference call with reporters that the future of the QB position is unresolved at this point in the spring-practice period.

“We’re not trying to establish a leader,” Groh said of the work being done at the quarterback position, where Lalich, rising senior Scott Deke and rising sophomore Marc Verica are all getting time this spring.

“We’ll continue this throughout camp here – make sure that all of the players get equal turns with each group. And sometimes the turns are based on equal rotations. Sometimes we’ve determined that through our self-scouting of the calls throughout practice that maybe on a particular pattern when we’re just going through our quarterback rotation, this quarterback has come up short in getting enough turns with a particular pattern. So he may go in at that particular time so he can get more exposure to that pattern against a particular coverage, something like that,” Groh said.

Of the three, Lalich is the only one who saw any game action in 2007. Lalich played in eight games as a true freshman, completing 35 of his 61 pass attempts for 321 yards and two touchdowns.

Lalich also had one pass intercepted, and had a fumble late in the Gator Bowl that led to a game-tying Texas Tech score in what turned out to be a 31-28 Virginia loss.
