policecar3At 1:50 p.m. Tuesday (June 2), Virginia State Police Senior Trooper S.A. Simmons responded to a crash that occurred in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 64 near the 90 mile marker in Augusta County. A vehicle traveling east on I-64 pulled off onto the shoulder and the driver got in an argument with the two passengers. During the course of the argument, the driver stepped out of the vehicle and purposely stepped into the right eastbound travel lane.

An eastbound 2013 Toyota Corolla was unable to avoid the pedestrian and struck the male subject. The male subject, Fontane Nelson, 38, of New York, N.Y., was flown to UVA Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Corolla, a 19-year-old Staunton woman, was not injured in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
