Four unoccupied homes have collapsed in Buxton in the Outer Banks in the last two days due to wind and rough surf from the recent coastal storm, according to Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Three of the homes were on Tower Circle Road and one was on Old Lighthouse Road. With the addition of these homes, the total hat have collapsed on Seashore beaches since 2020 is 31.

The addresses of the homes that collapsed Feb. 1-2 were:

  • 46201 Tower Circle Road
  • 46215 Tower Circle Road
  • 46219 Tower Circle Road
  • 46285 Old Lighthouse Road

Nineteen homes, including the four that fell since Sunday, are located in Buxton. These are the first homes to fall in Buxton since October. Eight homes previously collapsed on Tower Circle Road.

To date, 12 homes have also collapsed in nearby Rodanthe, approximately 25 miles from Buxton; the last one in November 2024.

Due to the continued threat of collapse of oceanfront structures, beaches in the villages of Rodanthe and Buxton are currently closed including:

  • Rodanthe: The beach is closed from East Point Drive south to Surfside Drive (0.15 miles)
  • Buxton: The entire beachfront from the north end to near ORV ramp 43 is closed

Most of the private properties that have collapsed are adjacent to Seashore beaches and are elevated, situated on pilings; some are partially or fully covered with ocean water on a regular basis. According to the National Park Service, during severe weather events, homes of this nature are vulnerable due to strong winds and waves.
