A 17-year-old boy is dead after a crash that followed a police pursuit early Sunday morning in Orange County.

The juvenile driver’s name has not been released. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

According to Virginia State Police, the boy died after his vehicle went off the right side of the road, struck a ditch, mailbox and two trees, and then went airborne and hit a second mailbox, before coming to a stop.

The fatal crash occurred at 2:01 a.m. on Constitution Highway, or Route 20, near the intersection with Woodside Road.

The accident came after a pursuit by the Town of Orange Police Department. No reason was given for the initial chase by law enforcement.

The crash remains under investigation, according to VSP.
