UVA swimming alum Kate Douglass won gold in the 200M breaststroke at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Thursday.
Douglass, a 2023 Virginia alum, won the race in 2:19.24, breaking her own American record in the event.
Her win makes Douglass the first UVA swimmer to win an individual Olympic gold medal in program history.
Douglass had won a bronze medal at Tokyo 2020 in the 200 IM.
The gold is Douglass’ second medal at Paris 2024 after winning silver in the 4×100 free relay. It is also the second gold medal for the American women in swimming at Paris 2024.
Another UVA swimming alum, Paige Madden, won silver in the 4×200 free relay.
Madden, a 2021 Virginia alum, swam the second leg of the race in 1:55.65, helping the American team finish second with a time of 7:40.86.
Australia won gold in an Olympic-record time of 7:38.08.
With the two medals, UVA swimmers have won five medals at the Games, one gold and four silver.
