A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist College poll of Virginia voters has Democrat Barack Obama leading Republican Mitt Romney by a two-point margin in the presidential race, and has Democrat Tim Kaine ahead of Republican George Allen by five points in the U.S. Senate race.
Obama was at 48 percent and Romney was at 46 percent in the poll. Obama had held a 49 percent-to-46 percent lead in a September NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist College poll of Virginia voters, suggesting a slight narrowing of the race in recent weeks.
The poll internals suggest a hardening of voter positions as the race heads into the final month. Ninety-eight percent of those saying they plan to vote for Obama said they “strongly support” or “somewhat support” the president, with just 2 percent saying they “might vote differently” or are “unsure” about their vote. The related numbers for Romney are very similar, with 97 percent strong or somewhat strong in their support of the Republican, and 3 percent conceding that they might vote differently or are unsure of their final vote choice.
While the presidential race is tightening a bit, the Senate race is moving in the opposite direction. Kaine and Allen were tied in a September NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist College poll in Virginia at 46 percent each. Now Kaine has a 49 percent-to-44 percent lead.
