Nats rally, defeat Yankees on Ryan Zimmerman walkoff, 8-6

nationals_logoRyan Zimmerman hit a two-out, two-run homer off the foul pole off Yankees closer Andrew Miller, completing a Nats comeback in an 8-6 10-inning Washington win Tuesday night in Nationals Park.

Zimmerman’s shot, on a 96-mph 3-1 fastball from Miller, was just the fourth hit surrendered in 2015 by Miller (0-1), who hadn’t allowed a run until Tuesday night, and had a .053 batting average against before the blast.

The Yankees led 6-2 in the fifth before Washington put up a three-spot on a Clint Robinson RBI double, and back-to-back RBI singles by Ian Desmond and Yunel Escobar that cut the deficit to 6-5.

An inning later, Wilson Ramos went deep on a 96-mph 3-0 fastball from New York reliever David Carpenter for a long homer to deep left, his second home run of the season.

The balls were flying out of Nationals Park Tuesday night. Bryce Harper hit his 15th of the season, a solo shot in the first, and Desmond also hit a solo homer, his third of the season, in the opening frame.

Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira hit his 12th homer of the season and 375th homer of his MLB career in the fifth.

The Nats improve to 16-4 in their last 20 games, and the win lifts them into a first-place tie in the National League East with the New York Mets.
