Nats in first: Washington tops Yankees for second straight night

nationals_logoWashington made the most of its five hits, getting solo homers from Ian Desmond and Tyler Moore, and a strong seven-inning effort from Jordan Zimmerman, lifting the Nats to a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees Wednesday night at Nationals Park.

The win puts Washington in first place in the National League East by a game over the New York Mets. It is the first time the Nats have been in first place all season.

Zimmerman (4-2) gave up two runs on five hits in seven innings of work, striking out eight and walking one.

Both Yankee runs came in the first, on an RBI double by Carlos Beltran and a sacrifice fly by Brian McCann.

Desmond’s solo shot came in the bottom of the first and cut the deficit to 2-1.

Bryce Harper provided some fireworks, getting ejected in the third inning after an odd back-and-forth with home-plate umpire Marvin Hudson, who then ejected Nats manager Matt Williams.

Moore’s homer came in the fourth and tied the score at 2. It stayed that way into the seventh, when Denard Span singled to left, scoring Wilson Ramos with the eventual winning run.

Drew Storen notched his 12th save with a scoreless ninth.
