virginia soccerHayden Partain’s golden goal in the 93rd minute lifted No. 21 Wake Forest to a 1-0 overtime win over the No. 17 UVA men’s soccer team Saturday night at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. The match was the ACC opener for both sides.

Virginia suffered its first defeat of the season, dropping to 2-1-1, while Wake Forest won its fourth straight match and improved to 4-1.

Wake Forest out-shot UVA 16-11, including a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Wake took six corners to one for Virginia. Both goalkeepers – UVA’s Jeff Caldwell (Jr., Todd, N.C.) and Wake Forest’s Andreu Cases Mundet made five saves.

Wake controlled the run of play for much of the first half and the first 20 minutes of the second half. The Demon Deacons found some holes early in the second half but could not capitalize. Ema Twumasi got a pair of shots from 12 yards about 10 minutes into the half, but sent both of them just wide of the far post.

UVA seized control for about a 20-minute stretch late in the second half, dominating the possession battle while creating quality chances. The Cavaliers’ best opportunity came in the 77th minute when Raheem Taylor-Parkes (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) sent a ball near the goal line back into the center of the box, where UVA got a pair of shots before the Wake defense cleared the loose ball near the goal line.

The Demon Deacons scored on their first shot of extra time as Jon Bakero corralled a ball on the left flank and sent a low cross to the near post, where Partain slipped just behind the UVA defense and poked it past Caldwell for his first goal of the year.

UVA returns home at Klöckner Stadium next week for a pair of matches, taking on VCU Wednesday (Sept. 14) and No. 2 Clemson Saturday (Sept. 17). Both contests start at 7 p.m.
