Melee at Waynesboro restaurant involves dozens: Police search for hit-and-run driver

policecar3A fight reportedly involving dozens of people outside a Waynesboro restaurant appears to be connected to a hit-and-run accident on West Main Street that has left a 28-year-old in critical condition at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Waynesboro Police are seeking information on the hit-and-run that occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. Saturday near Chauncey’s Smokehouse and Bar, 2323 West Main Street.  Officers had responded to the restaurant for a report of a large fight on the parking lot involving several dozen people.  When the first officer arrived, he noticed a pedestrian that had been struck still in the roadway in front of the restaurant.

According to a witness at the scene, the victim was present at the fight and then ran into the road where he was struck by an unidentified westbound vehicle.  It is unknown at this point why the victim was in the road.

Additional officers arrived, including Augusta County Sheriff’s Deputies and Virginia State Troopers, and were able to quell the fight and shut down the road in order to aid the victim.  He was transported to Augusta Health and then airlifted to UVA.

Although there were numerous people outside when the victim got struck, only a few witnesses came forward to provide information to the officers.  It is also believed that some bystanders took property of the victim from the scene without notifying police.

The police department is requesting anyone with information in this incident is asked to call Sergeant R.B. Luzader at (540) 942-6684 or the Waynesboro Police Department at (540) 942-6675 or Central Shenandoah Crime Stoppers at 1(800)322-2017.  Information given to Crime Stoppers may be given anonymously.  Callers with information that lead to an arrest in this case are eligible for a cash reward of up to $1000.
