Mathews County Commonwealth’s Attorney dead from gunshot wound

The Mathews County Commonwealth’s Attorney was found dead in her home this morning from an apparent gunshot wound.

The victim has been identified as Tina Marie Walls, 59, according to Virginia State Police.

Her body was found at her home in the 4500 block of New Point Comfort Highway.

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Chesapeake field office is investigating the death at the request of the local sheriff’s office.

WTVR reported she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

State Police said only that “there is no indication a suspect is involved.”

Walls was chosen as the Mathews County Commonwealth’s Attorney in the Nov. 7, 2023, election.

She was a lifelong resident of Virginia, growing up in Williamsburg. She worked as a legal aid attorney on the Eastern Shore and was a former prosecutor in Suffolk. She previously served as the executive director of a child abuse program at the Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters, or CHKD.

VSP said the investigation is open and active, and additional information will be provided when available.
