Sophomore Lucas Woodhouse/Greenlawn, New York made a three-point field goal with just 1.7-seconds remaining to lead visiting Longwood University to an 82-79 men’s basketball victory on the road at TCU of the Big 12 Conference on Tuesday night at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas.

Senior Tristan Carey/Colonial Beach scored a game-high 31 points, including 20 in the first half, to lead Longwood to its first victory under new head coach Jayson Gee.  Kyan Anderson led the Horned Frogs (0-2) with 17 points.  Longwood will return home to play Division II Mars Hill University in its first game at Willett Hall in Farmville onSaturday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m.

“I just think it’s a great win for the Lancer Nation,” said Gee.  “I’m very proud of our kids and I’m just thankful to Troy Austin for giving me this opportunity to coach these young men … they really fought through some adversity.  I’m just happy for Longwood University.  It’s a great win for our program.  I have a lot of faith in our program, our system and what we are doing.  It certainly has to be the biggest win in Longwood Basketball history.”

Longwood scored the first nine points of the game to lead 9-0 at 15:07, as sophomore Karl Ziegler/Annandale and redshirt-junior Jeylani Dublin/Brooklyn, New York each scored baskets ahead of five quick points from Carey, including the first of his seven three-pointers.  Carey’s second triple made it 12-2 at 14:02, and the lead was still comfortable at 19-10 with 10:36 on the clock following a free throw by sophomore transfer Leron Fisher/Baltimore, Maryland.  TCU closed to within 19-15 at 9:15 following a three-pointer by Brandon Parrish and a jumper from Jarvis Ray, but Fisher scored on a layup and added the free throw for an old fashioned three-point play at 8:54 that ignited a 21-9 run toward a 40-24 advantage, and the visitors led 40-27 at halftime.  Carey had 10 points during the outburst en route to scoring his 20 first-half points, and freshman Darrion Allen/Pompano Beach, Florida closed the run with his first collegiate three-pointer.

TCU began the second half with a 13-0 run to tie the game at 40-40 with 16:22 remaining, getting points from five different players.  Longwood responded with a layup from Ziegler and another conventional three-point play, this time by Allen at 15:45, to push the lead back to 45-40.  Another three-pointer from Carey made it 52-45 at 10:20, before the Horned Frogs used a 10-2 run to take their first lead of the night at 55-54 after a three-pointer by Michael Williams with8:43 on the clock.  Christian Gore made two free throws at 5:16 to give TCU its final lead, 63-61, but the Lancers again had an answer … putting together an 11-3 run  to lead 72-66 with 1:01 left after two free throws by Carey.  Two more free throws from Woodhouse made it 74-68 at 0:44, a pair of free throws by Fisher made it 76-70 at 0:36, and two more free throws from Woodhouse made it 78-72 at 0:25.  The hosts made it interesting, though, as Anderson scored on a layup (0:21) and Parrish made a three-pointer (0:19) to make it 78-77.  Fisher was 1-2 at the line with 18-seconds left, making it 79-77, but Anderson made two free throws with 7.1-seconds to go to tie it again at 79-79.  Woodhouse secured the historic triumph with his dramatic three-pointer with less than two seconds remaining.

Carey led Longwood with his 31 points, making 7-12 three-pointers, adding six rebounds.  Ziegler posted his first collegiate double-double with 14 points and a career-high and game-high 10 rebounds, while Fisher, making his first start, and Allen, off the bench, each finished with 11 points for the Lancers.  Dublin contributed eight points and Woodhouse had seven points and a game-high seven assists.  Longwood shot 55% (29-53) from the field, including 56% (9-16) on three-pointers, and 75% (15-20) at the free throw line.

Anderson led TCU with his 17 points, adding five assists.  Ray had 15 points for the Gamecocks, while Parrish finished with 13 points, and Williams added 11 points.  TCU shot 46% (25-54) from the field, including 33% (4-12) on three-pointers, and 74% (25-34) at the line.

Longwood and TCU were meeting for the first time on the hardwood, though the Lancers had previously been 0-5 against members of the Big 12 Conference.  It’s the Lancers first win against a member of a power conference (new AAC, ACC, Big 10, Big 12, BIG EAST, Pac-12 and/or the SEC).
