JMU women roll past Towson, 78-45

jmu logoJMU stayed in second place in the Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball standings with a 79-45 win over Towson Thursday evening at the JMU Convocation Center.

JMU upped its overall record to 18-8 and its CAA record to 12-2.  Towson dropped to 9-17 overall and 3-12 in league play.

Dukes redshirt freshman guard Jazmon Gwathmey (Bealeton, Va./Liberty) and senior guard Tarik Hislop (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) tied for game scoring honors with 17 points apiece.  It was a career-high for Gwathmey, who was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field and also had nine rebounds.

JMU junior guard Kirby Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) got her sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and freshman guard Precious Hall (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay) also scored 14.

Towson got 10 points each from junior guard Tanisha McTiller (Chicago, Ill./Lincoln Park) and redshirt junior forward Nyree Williams (Ellicott City, Md./Howard).  McTiller and freshman guard Alliyah Berger (Landover, Md./Archbishop Carroll) shared team rebounding honors with seven apiece.

With the score tied at 11 at 9:52, the Dukes scored nine unanswered points to start a 13-2 scoring run that put JMU ahead 24-13 with 2:17 remaining.

The Dukes led 26-16 at the half and held a double-digit lead for all except a brief period in the opening minute of the second period when Towson got within eight.

JMU shot 68 percent (21-31) in the second period and 49 percent (32-66) for the game.  Towson connected on only 36 percent (18-50) from the field.

The Dukes won for the 15th time in their last 17 games, while Towson saw its winning streak end at two games.
