JMU softball’s Megan Good garners CAA Pitcher of the Week Award

good_megan_14_15James Madison freshman Megan Good was recognized for her outstanding play last weekend in Florida by being named Colonial Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Good earned two victories at the Citrus Classic in Orlando after pitching 13.0 innings with a 1.62 ERA, allowing just three earned runs and eight hits, while striking out 11 batters.

“I am extremely pleased with the way Megan is carrying herself on the mound,” Head Coach Mickey Dean said. “She is pitching with tremendous purpose and confidence, which in turn gives our team confidence.”

She tossed a complete game, giving up two runs and four hits while striking out seven to upend then-No. 13 Minnesota, 8-2. Good also pitched six innings of relief against Penn State, conceding just one run and four hits, to help the Dukes win 2-1 in extra innings.

She was also one of the leaders at the plate, hitting .545 on 6-for-11 batting. She drove in three runs and scored twice herself while not striking out in any of her plate appearances. In the Minnesota win, she finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Through three weeks of the season, Good leads JMU both offensively and defensively. She is batting .417 with one home run, seven RBIs and five runs and is also 4-0 in the starting rotation with a 0.93 ERA. She has tossed three complete games, allowing just five runs (four earned) and 15 hits in her 30.0 innings pitched. Good has also accrued one save.

This is the second CAA accolade for the freshman as she was also named CAA Rookie of the Week back on Feb. 17. It is also the second pitcher of the week honor for a JMU player, as junior Jailyn Ford was named the league’s top pitcher, also on Feb. 17.

The CAA also recognized UNCW’s Darian Roberts as CAA Player of the Week and Delaware Jordan Cargile as CAA Rookie of the Week.

JMU opens its home slate Wednesday at 4 p.m. with a doubleheader against Virginia at Veterans Memorial Park.

Everything you wanted to know about a heat dome, but were afraid to ask

A “heat dome” is worse than a “heat wave,” I’m learning, because “heat dome” refers to hot weather that can last a week or more, while a “heat wave” can be over in as few as three days.
