Today’s example that JD Vance is a soulless prick: he was told that the beauty-pageant contestant in a video clip that he used to mock Kamala Harris contemplated suicide resulting from the relentless social-media bullying that she’d endured over the video, and he, twice, refused to apologize to her.
“Look, I’ve said a lot of things on camera, I’ve said a lot of stupid things on camera. Sometimes when you’re in the public eye, you make mistakes. And again, I think the best way to deal with it is to laugh at ourselves, laugh at this stuff, and try to have some fun in politics,” Vance told CNN host John Berman on Friday.
Sociopath (n.): a person with antisocial personality disorder, a mental health condition that causes people to lack empathy and disregard the rights and feelings of others.
Berman was talking with Vance, the MAGA vice-presidential nominee, who was on CNN to counterprogram the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz interview that was broadcast on Thursday night.
In the leadup to the interview, Vance, who can’t even order a donut without stepping on his own dick, posted a once-viral clip of South Carolina beauty-pageant contestant Caitlin Upton, who struggle-bussed through an answer to a question in the 2007 Miss Teen USA contest, saying in an interview on the “Today Show” after the pageant that she was “overwhelmed” when she first heard the question:
“Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?”
Given a second chance to respond by “Today” hosts Matt Lauer and Anne Curry, Upton said:
“Well, personally, my friends and I, we know exactly where the United States is on our map. I don’t know anyone else who doesn’t. And if the statistics are correct, I believe that there should be more emphasis on geography in our education so people will learn how to read maps better.”
Upton later revealed, in a 2015 interview, that the online negativity that she faced led to her becoming “very, very depressed,” and that she had “thought about committing suicide.”
Berman wasn’t exactly grilling Vance on this point; it felt like he was trying to goad the VP pick into showing even just a basic shred of humanity.
This was Berman, giving Vance a second chance to right the wrong:
“I just want to be clear, though. You said you didn’t know. Would you like to apologize to Caitlin Upton for posting that up there last night, given what you’ve now learned?”
This was what the sociopath said in response:
“John, I’m not going to apologize for posting a joke, but I wish the best for Caitlin.”
