Interstate 81 in Rockingham County was the site of two accidents overnight, one involving two tractor trailers and one with a fire truck responding to the initial crash.
Both accidents occurred near the 238-mile marker at approximately 12:15 a.m. this morning; the initial accident was on northbound I-81; the second crash involved a first responder vehicle called to the scene on the southbound side of the interstate.
The initial crash involved two tractor trailers, according to Virginia State Police. A tractor trailer jack-knifed, and the second tractor trailer struck the first. Both trucks came to rest in the median of the interstate. The driver of the second truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
A Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Company truck was responding to the crash with its emergency lights activated on I-81 southbound.
As the fire truck slowed down, it was struck by the driver of a Ford sedan. The driver of the Ford suffered serious injuries; a passenger also had injuries in the crash.
No one in the fire truck was injured.
The driver of the initial tractor trailer that jack-knifed has been charged with reckless driving.
The crashes remain under investigation.
