richmond flying squirrelsThe Flying Squirrels (8-13) could not complete the series sweep on Wednesday night, falling 6-3 to the Baysox at Prince George’s Stadium.

Bowie (9-11) right-hander David Hess hurled seven innings of one-run baseball to earn the win. Richmond closed the gap with a pair of runs in the eighth inning but fell short in the finale. Tyler Horan smashed his second homer of the season and Ali Castillo added three more hits while bating leadoff for the first time this season to lead the Richmond attack. The Squirrels are off on Thursday and will open a seven game homestand at The Diamond on Friday night. The promotional lineup and details for the series can be found here.

On a chilly night in Bowie, the Baysox plated a pair of runs in the first against Squirrels starting pitcher Chase Johnson.  With two outs, Jimmy Paredes lined a single to left to get the ball rolling. Johnson then walked Corban Joseph and yielded a run-scoring single to first baseman Joey Terdoslavich. Chance Sisco followed suite with a base hit to take a 2-0 edge. The Baysox added another in the second as Tucker Nathans launched a solo homerun to right field for a 3-0 lead.

Richmond responded against David Hess in the top of the third inning with a solo home run of their own. Tyler Horan drilled a ball into the batter’s eye in left centerfield, trimming the deficit to 3-1. It was the second home run of the season for Horan in limited action

Johnson managed to regain control through the middle innings in his fourth outing of the year. Johnson retired the side in order in the third and four innings and set down eight consecutive batters from the end of the second – into the fifth. That stretch was interrupted with one out in the fifth, when Mike Yasztremski single to left. Josepth then singled with two outs and Terdoslavich managed to work a walk to load the bases. Johnson remained in the game to face Chance Sisco and Sisco cleared the bases with a double for a 6-0 lead.

Hess found his footing after the Horan home run. The righty retired the side in the fourth and picked up a double play to face the minimum in the fifth. Richmond’s Ryder Jones ledoff the sixth with a base hit but Hess induced another twin killing to face the minimum. Overall, Hess worked seven innings and allowed just the one run on five hits to earn the win. He struck out five and walked just one in his fourth start of the seasonHess was replaced to open the eighth inning and Richmond pounced on the new pitcher Garrett Cortright. Eliezer Zambrano incited a rally with a base it to right. Ali Castillo then roped his third hit of the day and seventh of the series. Castillo was brought home on Ryder Jones double, pulling Richmond within three, 6-3.

The Richmond bullpen was sharp once again to keep the game close. Christian Jones, Dan Slania and Jake Smith all turned in scoreless outings in the loss.
