Motorists should be alert for travel-lane shifts on Monday, June 30, 2025, on eastbound Route 33 (East Market Street) in Harrisonburg.

The travel lane shifts will take place around the Interstate 81 exit 247 interchange, starting at the Carlton Street intersection to just west of the new bridge over Interstate 81.

Just east of the Carlton Street intersection, eastbound Route 33 drivers will shift onto newly built roadway prior to the Martin Luther King Jr Way intersection, and new portion of the Norfolk Southern Railway bridge over the railroad.

After crossing over the new railroad bridge, drivers will be tied back into the new alignment of the Route 33 eastbound lanes, just prior to the I-81 southbound entrance ramp. The lane shifts will take place on June 30 during daylight hours.

Along with the eastbound Route 33 traffic shift, Martin Luther King Jr Way will be restored to right and left turn movements at its intersection with Route 33. The existing detour route, which is posted on Reservoir Street between its intersection with Martin Luther King Jr Way and South Carlton Street, will be removed.

The new traffic pattern will restore two travel lanes in both the eastbound and westbound direction throughout the project. The work is part of ongoing construction on Route 33 at the Interstate 81 exit 247 interchange in Harrisonburg,

All work is weather permitting and the schedule is subject to change. The Virginia Department of Transportation will provide updates as needed.

VDOT contractors are replacing the two Route 33 bridges over I-81 at exit 247 and the two railway bridges just west of the interchange. The project also includes several improvements to the exit 247 interchange. A work-zone speed limit of 25 miles an hour is in place on Route 33 for the duration of the project, which is scheduled for completion in summer 2026. Additional information is available on the VDOT project page.

In July 2022, a $43.3 million contract was awarded to Triton Construction Inc. of Virginia, headquartered in St. Albans, W.Va.
