Gun-flashing drunk driver arrested in Waynesboro

The Waynesboro Police Department has arrested a Waynesboro man on several misdemeanor charges after he drunkenly drove around Waynesboro neighborhood brandishing a rifle out his car window.

Tigner Charles HughOn Tuesday, at approximately 4:15 p.m., officers responded to area of Jackson Avenue and A Street, which is in a neighborhood locally known as “The Philippines,” to investigate a call about a man pointing a gun at people from a car.

An officer located a 1998 Honda Accord, driven by Charles Hugh Tigner, 32, on the property of a residence in the 1500 block of Wine Avenue. There were several residents attempting to block the access to the property of Tigner’s vehicle with an ATV. When the officer tried to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect’s vehicle, Tigner drove away striking the occupied ATV in the process. The ATV was knocked several feet but the male driver was not injured.

The officer continued to follow the vehicle in an attempt to stop it. It finally stopped at the intersection of Kirby Avenue and A Street.  Officers temporarily blocked the roadway from other vehicles as they attempted to take Tigner into custody.

He was arrested without incident even though he was quite intoxicated.  When they searched Tigner’s vehicle, they found a 30 caliber lever action rifle and a pellet rifle with a scope.  Witnesses at the scene indicated that they saw Tigner driving around the neighborhood with one of the rifles pointed out the window.   At one point, witnesses said he got out of his vehicle with the rifle in his hand crossed the road before getting back in his car.

Tigner is facing the following charges:

· DUI/2nd offense in ten years

· Refusal of a breath test

· Brandishing a firearm

· Hit & run

· Trespassing

· Destruction of private property

He is being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail.
