basketball1George Washington is looking for a signature win early in its 2014-2015 schedule on the road at #9 UVA Friday night in the John Paul Jones Arena.

The Colonials, a 2014 NCAA Tournament participant, were picked second in the preseason Atlantic 10 poll after posting a 24-win season in 2013-2014. GW is 2-0 on the young season, with an impressive 70-53 win at Rutgers on Sunday.

GW returns three of the five players who averaged double figures in scoring last season: guard Kethan Savage (12.7 points per game, 4.7 rebounds per game in 2013-2014), swingman Patricio Garino (12.1 ppg in 2013-2014) and 6’10” forward Kevin Larsen (11.4 ppg, 6.9 rpg).

Another guard, Joe McDonald, a junior, has emerged in 2014-2015, averaging 11.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game through two games this season.

Quick Hits

  • The Colonials like to shoot from long-range (20.5 three-point attempts per game this season, up from 15.6 attempts per game last season), though they haven’t been particularly adept from behind the arc this season to date (29.3 percent in the very small sample size of two games, down from 36.4 percent last year).
  • Three players (Savage, McDonald and Larsen) are all averaging over 8.0 rebounds per game. GW is outrebounding its first two opponents by 16.5 caroms per game.
