Poor defense – four errors in the first three innings – put Waynesboro in a big hole to visiting Haymarket. The Generals made a game of it late, but the Senators were able to hold on for an 11-8 win Thursday night.
All told, Haymarket scored five unearned runs, and used the defensive miscues to jump out to a 9-1 lead after three innings off Waynesboro starter Seth Lucio (2-2), who had trouble pitching around the sloppy ball being played behind him.
To the Generals’ credit, they fought back to make it interesting. A two-run seventh-inning single off the bat of Austin johnston cut the lead to three and brought the tying run to the plate. Reliever D.J. Gunderson picked Johnston off first base to end that threat, though, and Waynesboro didn’t threaten seriously in the eighth or ninth.
Johnston, Julian Ridings and Ryan Breen each had two hits. Joseph Lucas was effective in relief, giving up a run on three hits in three innings, and Jeff Conley put up scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth to keep it close.
The loss drops Waynesboro into a first-place tie with Harrisonburg in the South Division.
The Generals (17-9) host Strasburg (10-19) at Mathers Park at Kate Collins Field Friday night at 7 p.m.
