A driver on Interstate 66 this morning struck snow and ice and went airborne, landing on the Metro Rail.

The driver, who has not been identified, suffered minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital. He has been charged with reckless driving, according to Virginia State Police.

The crash occurred at 11:25 a.m. on I-66 westbound near the 64 mile marker in Fairfax County.

The preliminary investigation determined the driver reached down to grab his EZ pass device and ran off the left side of the road. The vehicle then struck snow and ice on the left shoulder, which acted as a ramp, sending the vehicle airborne. The vehicle went through fencing and landed on the Metro Rail.

Metro Transit Police and Fairfax Fire and Rescue assisted with the incident.

The crash remains under investigation.
