Fading Washington loses late lead again, falls to St. Louis, 8-5

nationals_logoA three-run Brandon Moss walk-off homer completed another St. Louis comeback as the Washington Nationals bullpen blew a late lead again in an 8-5 loss Tuesday night.

For the second straight night, Casey Janssen (1-4, 4.91 ERA) was victimized by Cardinals hitters, but he wasn’t the only Nat reliever flailing at Busch Stadium.

Drew Storen posted his fourth blown save, giving up two runs in the eighth, on a Greg Garcia squeeze bunt and a Stephen Piscotty double-play ball, coughing up a 5-3 lead.

Janssen got the first two out in the bottom of the ninth before giving up a two-strike double to Cody Stanley, and a walk on a 3-2 pitch to Tommy Pham, in advance of the Moss bomb, his 18th of the season.

Joe Ross had an odd night in his start for the Nats, lasting only two and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on one hit and six walks.

Washington (66-65) failed to gain ground on the New York Mets (73-59) in the National League East. The Mets lost to Philadelphia, 14-8, on Tuesday.
