UVA Athletics announced Tuesday a $5 million gift from athletics donors Drew and Kate Parker that Athletics Director Carla Williams is saying will provide support for recruiting and operations for UVA Basketball.
“This type of philanthropic generosity is critical in this new era of collegiate men’s basketball, and we are very grateful for Kate and Drew’s commitment to helping us,” Williams said.
I’m imagining that this money is going to be put into an endowment so that the interest money can be used annually toward recruiting and operations, because it wouldn’t last long otherwise.
UVA Basketball spent $319,777, $109,486 on uniforms and equipment, $1.01 million on travel and $1.46 million on game expenses in 2024, according to the Sportico college-sports finance database.
That’s just under $3 million, and you could probably throw the $610,000 that the program spent on home-game guarantees to the cupcake opponents into the mix here.
That $5 million gets us $250,000 a year, give or take, toward that line item.
“This transformational $5 million commitment comes at a moment when our entire athletics program is competing – and succeeding – at the highest levels nationally. It fuels our pursuit of excellence and gives our student-athletes the resources they deserve,” Virginia Athletics Foundation Executive Director Kevin Miller said.
Probably going a little overboard there calling the $5 million “transformational,” but anyway.
“We are profoundly grateful to the Parkers for their visionary leadership, which not only elevates our momentum but inspires others to champion the future of our teams. When generosity meets ambition, entire programs are transformed,” Miller said.
Quote here from Ryan Odom, the first-year UVA Basketball coach:
“We are so grateful to Drew and Kate for their incredible generosity and belief in Virginia Basketball. Our mission is to develop men of character who pursue excellence on and off the court. Their investment will help make that possible by ensuring our student-athletes have every opportunity to reach their full potential. We’re honored to have their support and thankful for their tremendous commitment to Virginia Basketball.”
It’s nice of them to say thanks, and all.
I get it.
