Defending NCAA champ UVa. men’s tennis hosts NCAA tourney

uva-logo-new2The reigning NCAA champion UVa. men’s tennis team will begin its quest for another title this weekend by hosting first and second round action of the 2014 NCAA Tournament Saturday and Sunday at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers play Army in the first round on Saturday at 12 p.m., with penn state and UNC Wilmington meeting in the other first round match at 9 a.m. The first round winners will meet in the second round at 1 p.m. on Sunday for a trip to the round of 16 next week at Georgia.

This weekend’s matches are scheduled to be played outdoors at the Snyder Tennis Center and there will be free parking for fans at the Culbreth Garage. The NCAA will make every attempt to play tournament matches outdoors, but if weather conditions prevent outdoor play, matches will be moved indoors to the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers (23-2) are hosting first and second round play for the 11th consecutive year. The 2014 ACC Champion, Virginia is looking to advance to the round of 16 for the 11th consecutive year. The Cavaliers have played in the last three NCAA Tournament finals, winning their first title with a 4-3 win over UCLA last season. Since 2004, only Georgia (40 wins) has posted more NCAA Tournament victories than Virginia (39 wins).

Army (20-5) is making its sixth NCAA Tournament appearance after winning the Northeast Conference. It is the Black Knights’ second trip to Charlottesville, having played Virginia in the first round in 2006. penn state (21-5) earned an at-large bid to the tournament. The Nittany Lions, who making their sixth postseason appearance, were last in the NCAA Tournament in 2008, when they traveled to Charlottesville, downing VCU in the first round before falling to the Cavaliers. UNC Wilmington (15-6) is making its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance, having advanced to the second round for the first time last year.

The Virginia women’s tennis team is also hosting first and second round NCAA Tournament play this weekend at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavalier women play youngstown state in the first round, in a match beginning at Friday at 1 p.m.Kentucky and Columbia meet in the other first round match at 10 a.m. The first round winners will meet in the second round at3 p.m. on Saturday for a trip to the round of 16.
