salem red soxThe Salem Red Sox fell short in a late-game comeback attempt, losing to the Winston-Salem Dash Mondaynight at LewisGale Field, 5-3.

Winston-Salem jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second against Matt Kent. The Dash (17-28) plated three more runs against the Texan southpaw to open up a 4-0 advantage.

The Red Sox (30-14) responded with a trio of tallies against Dash starter Thad Lowry (3-3) in the bottom of the third. Jordan Betts led off the inning with a double and would score later when Mauricio Dubon grounded into a fielder’s choice. Dubon and Ben Moore, who walked after Betts’ double, came home on a Mike Meyers single to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Meyers, moved to the three-hole for the second-straight game, continued his recent hot streak by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and his eighth stolen base of the season.

Kent (2-3) completed 6.0 innings for Salem, tip-toeing around more trouble but stranding nine Winston-Salem runners on base, including six in scoring position. The lefty finished 6.0 innings for the fourth consecutive start despite tying a career high by allowing 11 hits.

Yankory Pimentel relieved Kent and tossed 2.0 scoreless frames, striking out two in the process. Taylor Grover allowed the Dash to plate an insurance run in the ninth to bloat the lead to 5-3.

Dash reliever Andre Wheeler gave up numerous hard-hit balls in his 3.0 innings, but got help from his defense in the form of a double play and two outfield assists to record a three-inning save, his second of the season.

The Red Sox hit the road to begin a seven-game road trip with a three-game series with the Potomac Nationals Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Salem will send Travis Lakins (4-2, 5.12) to the mound, while Potomac has not announced a starter yet. Follow along with all the action on the Salem Red Sox Baseball Network. Coverage with the Pre-game Show driven by Haley Toyota begins at 6:45 pm.
