A Charlottesville Police Department employee has been charged for accessing information about a family member from the Virginia DMV for a non-criminal justice purpose.

The employee, Paul Jones, was arrested on Thursday and placed on administrative leave, according to a press release from the Charlottesville PD.

The release indicated that the department was made aware of the allegation involving Jones, who is not a sworn police officer, on Aug. 5.

The allegation was investigated by the Charlottesville Commonwealth’s Attorney office and Virginia State Police.

“The alleged misuse of law enforcement databases is a breach of trust that will not be tolerated,” Charlottesville Police Chief Michael Kochis said in a statement. “Thank you to our Commonwealth Attorney and the Virginia State Police for acting so swiftly in investigating and determining a charging decision in this case.”
