The Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission has passed a resolution in support of “Day to Serve.” Day to Serve is a two week period between September 15th and 29th designated as a time to set aside political, religious and cultural differences and come together to “feed the hungry, protect and enhance the environment, as well as strengthen our communities.”
Since the inaugural “Day to Serve” in 2012, this remarkable and unprecedented event has swept from state capitals to local churches, schools, neighborhoods and families in Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. This outpouring of service has resulted in over 750 community events with more than 14,000 volunteers rendering 26,000 hours of service and donating 600,000 pounds of food to local food banks. These events have also helped to improve the environment through planting trees, cleaning up parks and streams and facilitating “adopt a road” campaigns.
The CSPDC Resolution encourages residents, faith-based organizations and community groups throughout the Central Shenandoah Valley region to participate and plan events as part of the “Day to Serve.” For more information, visitwww.daytoserve.org.
