Cassell Elementary student honored by AAA

Tyler Wertman, a student from Hugh K. Cassell Elementary School in Augusta County, was recently recognized by AAA Mid-Atlantic for being chosen as an outstanding AAA school safety patrol for 2009. Tyler was selected from 294 elementary schools that utilize the AAA’s signature school safety program throughout Central and Western Virginia.

Also selected from the Commonwealth included one student from one student from Buckingham County (Austin Cole Williams from Dillwyn Elementary School); four students from Henrico County (Earl Anderson from Arthur Ashe, Jr. Elementary School, Stacie Drumheller from Maude Trevvett Elementary School, Elizabeth Abigail Hickey from Longdale Elementary School, and Emilie Saksvig from Colonial Trail Elementary School); two students from the City of Richmond (Zadonte Johnston from Broad Rock Elementary School and Brianna Maryland from E.D. Redd Elementary School); and one student from Stafford County (Ariel Ferguson from Hampton Oaks Elementary School).

These nine students were recognized at the annual Outstanding AAA Safety Patrol Luncheon that was held on May 15, 2009 in Richmond. Each student received a plaque and will be receiving a $150 U.S. Savings Bond.

“These students were recognized for their special talents and dedication, used in the service of keeping their fellow students safe on the school grounds and on school buses,” said Randy Green, manager of safety services for the Mid-Atlantic Foundation for Safety and Education. “Their sacrifices of time and effort given before and after school, on top of their school work and other activities, show a great amount of character and desire. AAA salutes them for this dedication of service to others.”

AAA has served as the sole sponsor of the school safety patrol program nationwide since 1920. Schools throughout Virginia have utilized the program since 1927.
