The man shot and killed by law enforcement at a 7-Eleven in Broadway on Tuesday afternoon has been identified.
The deceased suspect was Mike Hopkins Smith, 61, of Broadway, according to Virginia State Police.
Smith was allegedly brandishing a knife at patrons of the convenience store, and later, an officer who responded to the incident.
Town of Broadway Police Chief J.D. Weaver said the actions of Smith resulted in the responding officer using “lethal force.”
The responding officer evacuated the store at 118 W. Lee St., and announced their presence to the suspect, according to a statement from the Town of Broadway. The shooting occurred at approximately 12:33 p.m. on Feb. 10.
Online court records showed Smith faced multiple charges related to public intoxication and trespassing in 2019 and 2020 in Rockingham County. He was found guilty of two Class 1 criminal misdemeanors for violating a protective order and trespassing in 2020 and sentenced to an active 30-day sentence. He was also sentenced to one year of supervised probation.

Virginia State Police is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
Once complete, the findings will be presented to the office of Rockingham County Commonwealth’s Attorney Marsha Garst for review.
