Brian Anken resigns as VMI lacrosse coach

vmi_logo2Virginia Military Institute lacrosse coach Brian Anken has resigned his post to pursue other professional opportunities, Athletics Director Dr. Dave Diles announced Tuesday.

Anken’s resignation is effective June 30.

Anken recently completed his fifth season at VMI and compiled a 10-59 overall record during that time including 4-25 in conference play that included seasons in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, A-Sun, and SoCon.

In his first season at VMI, the Keydets captured the program’s first statistical championship and led the nation in ground balls per game (39.62). VMI claimed the team face off winning percentage top spot in the national rankings the next year as former standout Stephen Robarge became the first player to win back-to-back groundballs per game (9.07) titles as well as the individual face-off percentage crown for a second straight season. Robarge also earned third team All-America honors in 2012. The 2013 VMI squad also led the nation in saves percentage.

Anken also had two players drafted professionally during his tenure. Robarge was selected in the sixth round and 44th overall by the Denver Outlaws in 2012 and Keith Long was selected by the Rochester Rattlers following the 2012 season. Anken also coached cadet-athletes to four all-conference honors, two All-Freshman team recipients, two national player-of-the-week awards, and five conference player-of-the-week honors.

A search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
