The National Park Service predicts the cherry blossom trees will reach peak bloom this weekend, March 28-31, in Washington, D.C.
The cherry blossoms around the National Mall Tidal Basin are currently in stage five and appear puffy white.
The peak bloom date is defined as the day when 70 percent of the Yoshino Cherry blossoms are open.
The peak bloom period lasts only a few days and the start time depends on weather conditions. Every year, millions of visitors travel to D.C. to admire the 3,700 trees in full bloom.
Historically, the blooms have come as early as March 15 and as late as April 18. Last year, the blossoms peaked on March 17.
The National Cherry Blossom Festival runs from March 20 to April 14.
The iconic trees serve as living symbols of the friendship and diplomacy of between the U.S. and Japan and traditionally are recognized as a way to usher in springtime.
For those unable to attend in person, there is a Bloom Cam set up so people worldwide can enjoy the blossoms.
