The mid-summer season in Shenandoah National Park is known for blackberries that can be found while hiking the trails and streams. Skyland Resort, located on mile 41.7 and 42.5 on Skyline Drive, is set to celebrate with a daylong event on Saturday July 26, 2014 featuring all things blackberry!
Executive Chef Paul Lombardy and Sous Chef Heather Cash will create delicious dishes that highlight this prolific fruit such as Pulled Pork with Blackberry BBQ Sauce, Grilled Chicken with Blackberry Relish, Blackberry Cobbler, Blackberry Trifle, and Blackberry Ice Cream. Other items featured are Blackberry Jellies and Syrup, Blackberry Lemonade, Blackberry Wine, and Blackberry Beer. All these delicious dishes and beverages will be available on the historic lower lawn area.
Family events, pony rides, children’s crafts, live entertainment will also be a big part of the day’s celebration. The day will be filled with regional talent and includes:
10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. featuring Glen Shelton
In 2012 Glen opened for Tanya Tucker, Joe Nichols, Darryl Worley, Little Texas, and Rhonda Vincent. His self-written “Help Me to Stand” hit #2 on the nationwide Christian Country Top 100. Glen has also been nominated for the ICM (Inspirational Country Music) Songwriter of the Year.
11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. featuring Shenandoah Valley Cloggers
The Shenandoah Valley Cloggers is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Appalachian clogging, a distinctive form of American folk dance, which encompasses many different traditions of step dances with Scottish, English, Dutch and German roots. To entertain a variety of ages, the troupe’s music includes everything from bluegrass, to country, to pop, to old time rock ‘n’ roll.
12:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m featuring Turkey Ridge String Band
Lead vocalist / guitarist Charles Tompkins and mandolin player-vocalist Alan Cohen have performed together since the 70’s. The band’s other members are Brenda Jeffries (bass, vocals), Marie Fox(banjo), Dan Lewis (vocals, guitar), and Bob Chappell (vocals, bass). TRSB specializes in “Americana” – Bluegrass, Folk, Country, and a few Oldies. Formed in June 2012, the band has well over 100 years of collective band experience.
2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m featuring Calico Cloggers
Calico Cloggers is an adult percussive dance group based in Northern Virginia. The group performs at festivals, fairs, retirement communities, and other venues, tailoring their shows to fit the venue theme or audience needs. Their repertoire includes traditional and modern clogging, Irish and Canadian step dancing, tap dancing, swing, and set dancing. They dance to bluegrass, country, Celtic, pop, swing, and hip-hop music. They include figure dances, line dances, duets and solos.
3:45 p.m. to 5 p.m featuring High Ground Blue Grass Band
A red hot contemporary bluegrass band with four different lead singers, all with the ability to sing any harmony part. Each song has its own distinct sound.
