Years ago, right after the Scott Stadium expansion had been completed, I had UVa. football season tickets with a group of friends sitting in the new upper deck behind the end zone. I remember that first year, must have been 2001, when there was practically nobody up there with us most of the way, and we were left thinking, I thought it had been announced that we’d sold out all the season-ticket allotment this year. Hunh.

And then came the Virginia Tech game in late November. The section heretofore empty was packed with maroon-and-orange-clad Tech fans.

That’s been the case every other year now since. The last time I sat in the section was ’05. I’m back up in the press box now, musing over an e-mail a friend and fellow UVa. football fan sent me over the weekend about how the ticket office is scheming to fill the upper deck with the right shade of orange.

Here we go …

“We would like to invite you to take advantage of an affordable three-game option to enjoy Virginia Football this fall. Please join us at Scott Stadium with our three-game Rivalry Package, which includes the home opener against William and Mary on September 5, the September 12 game against nationally-ranked TCU, and the November 28 match-up with Virginia Tech.

“This package will be available to Virginia fans, alumni, and faculty and staff beginning July 6. You’ll be able to purchase reserved seat tickets located in the upper deck sections of Scott Stadium for $108. From July 6 through July 12, you’ll have the opportunity to order these tickets before the general public.

“Beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, July 13, this package will be available to the general public. We want this new three-game package to be sold out before then and filled with Virginia fans. Spread the word to your fellow Cavalier fans. Let’s pack Scott Stadium with ‘Hoos on November 28!

Memo to the ticket office: You’re going to need more than a week to BeatTech at this game.
