BC students recognized for excellence in business

The George S. Aldhizer II Department of Economics and Business at Bridgewater College recognized seven students for excellence during the annual academic awards convocation on May 1.

Schyler C. Smiley, a junior business administration major from Staunton, Va., received the Robert L. Hueston Scholarship in Accounting. The award honors the contributions Robert L. Hueston made to the study of accounting at Bridgewater College while a member of the faculty from 1953 – 86. The award carries a $5,200 scholarship for the 2012-2013 academic year. Smiley is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smiley of Staunton.

The David G. and Margie Messick Smith Endowed Scholarship was presented to Juliana Peterson, a junior business administration major from Westminster, Md. The scholarship, which is awarded to a rising senior who has demonstrated exceptional promise in the field of management, was established by two Bridgewater graduates in memory of their grandparents, David G. and Margie Messick Smith. The award carries an $863 scholarship for the 2012-2013 academic year. Peterson is the daughter of James and Barbara Peterson of Westminster.

Thomas M. Moxley, a senior business administration major from Lovettsville, Va., received the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants Award given to an outstanding student studying accounting. The award consists of a certificate and Moxley’s name will be engraved on a plaque at Bridgewater College. Moxley is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Moxley of Lovettsville.

Lindsey D. Goode, a senior business administration major with a minor in equine studies from Defiance, Mo., received the Outstanding Senior Award for scholarly achievement and leadership. She was presented a Bridgewater College throw. Goode is the daughter of Charles and Susan Goode of Defiance.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to nearly 1,700 undergraduate students.
